North West’s Largest Independent Estate Agent

With its many infant, primary and secondary schools; West Derby is a popular place for young families looking to set up home in a quiet but thriving suburb. The assortment of detached and semi-detached homes offers a warm and neighbourly environment, in which a variety of small businesses such as restaurants, coffee shops and pubs thrive by connecting the locals with both the older and younger generations living in the area.

Although it may not be as leafy and green as other residential areas within the city, it does have its selection of recreational fields including the Bill Shankly Playing Fields, popular with budding footballers and the Alder Sports Club with its tennis court and cricket pitch. For those who are into health and fitness, it is also home to a large Lifestyles Gym which offers swimming lessons, school holiday activities and tennis coaching.

Five Quick Facts

1 Haymans Green, a residential road in West Derby was home to the Casbah Club, where The Beatles first practised as a band.  2 West Derby is considered to be far older than Liverpool itself and the historic West Derby Village was once the site of a Motte and Bailey castle.  3 Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, based in West Derby, was the first hospital to test Penicillin and also the first hospital to establish a neonatal unit in the UK.   4 Some of Liverpool’s biggest sporting stars have been educated in West Derby schools including Steven Gerrard (Cardinal Heenan) and Kyran Bracken (St. Edwards College)  5 West Derby Village is home to the only freestanding medieval courthouse in Britain and was built in 1586. Opposite the courthouse are stocks, where villagers used to throw rotten vegetables and fruit at offenders.

Lifestyle & Activities

At first glance, the built-up area of West Derby does not offer as much of an outdoors lifestyle as Allerton or Crosby. However, hidden behind the family homes is the vast Croxteth Country Park, where you can find the beautiful Croxteth Hall. This vast landscape offers locals a taste of the countryside, set far away from the sounds of the busy residential streets.

The 500-acre area has beautiful woodland areas, streams and ponds that offer a peaceful setting to enjoy running or walking with friends.

With Jungle Parc offering tree trekking and zip wires and a farm where animal-lovers will delight being up close and personal with a range of farm animals, there is so much for the family to get involved in all within one place. The park also boats a Riding Centre, where both beginners and pros can enjoy the beautiful horses and ponies that are cared for in the centre.

Schools

As West Derby is a popular place to live for young families, there are many schools located within close proximity; making it a popular choice for families with children of multiple ages. With the area having several churches, residents can find popular church schools including St. Mary’s Church of England school, located in West Derby Village, and St. Pauls Catholic School for infants and juniors.

For older children of secondary school age, there is Broughton Hall Catholic High School, exclusively for girls. It was founded in 1928 by The Sister of Mercy and the school still very much promotes the Catholic faith in school life. In its most recent Ofsted report, the school received an overall rating of ‘good’. Next door the Broughton Hall is Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School, exclusively for boys and shares a collective sixth form with the girls’ school.

For those who are looking to educate their children in independent education, Runnymede St. Edwards is a great choice. Based in the leafy Sandfield Park, the preparatory school offers a fantastic curriculum that includes French, Spanish and Music. Because of this well-rounded curriculum, many of their pupils are offered places at some of Liverpool’s most prestigious secondary schools including The Bluecoat School, Liverpool College and St. Edwards College, next door to Runnymede.

St. Edwards College is one of the region’s most respected secondary schools. Although the school is classed as an academy and non-fee paying, it’s independent status has ensured that the school has remained at the top of the list when it comes to best-performing schools in the area for many years.

Bars & Restaurants

Almond

When Almond arrived on the village food scene back in 2009, it made such a mark that it kickstarted the area’s new life as a thriving place for socialising, drinking and dining close to home. No longer was West Derby Village an old-fashioned place lacking life, it was filled with young couples, families and friends all wanting a taste of the relatively new art of suburban socialising.

The bijou-style restaurant was always known to be quite small and intimate but filled with the sounds of laughter and chatter from its many diners. Having expanded into the upstairs area of the building, it can now accommodate its array of fans. The food is exquisitely delicious and offers dishes from a variety of cuisines, including our very own best of British with Slow Roast Belly Pork, Beer Battered Fish and Chips and the beautiful dessert of Apple and Rhubarb Crumble. A must visit for locals
